Squatting
For many people without sufficient funds to secure private
rented accommodation there may be little option but to consider
squatting empty property.
It is estimated that there are some 20,000 people squatting in
London alone.
If you are considering squatting, then you can get specialist
advice from the Advisory Service for
Squatters.
The service is free and open to anyone living in England or Wales
[property laws are different in Scotland].
The service is open Monday to Friday 2pm to 6pm.
If you are intending to visit the offices it is best to ring first
to make sure someone is there.
The Advisory Service for Squatters also produce a booklet called,
"The Squatters Handbook" which costs £1.00. If you wish to be sent
a copy then you should send a cheque for £1.57 to also cover the
cost of postage.
One word of caution is that if you cause damage on gaining entrance
to a property, then you may be guilty of a criminal offence.
