Pack a Healthy Lunch (PAHL)
Practical guidance to encourage healthy eating in
multicultural primary schools
Pack a Healthy Lunch (PAHL) is a resource developed by the food
and nutrition team at Shepherds Bush Healthy Living Centre (SBHLC)
who were able to develop this valuable resource through partnership
and support from H&F Local Authority and H&F PCT.
The two main reasons SBHLC decided to produce PAHL were:
- observations in local schools revealed the children were
frequently bringing in unhealthy choices for their lunches.
- because there are no government guidelines for the nutritional
content of packed lunches
This pack, the first of its kind in the country, is designed for
use in primary schools and we hope it will be particularly useful
for those schools where the pupils come from a variety of cultural
and ethnic backgrounds.
The main aim of PAHL is to support schools to encourage families,
who provide packed lunches for their children at school, to improve
the choice and variety of foods they serve.
PAHL importantly helps schools in the borough meet the National
Healthy School Status targets that the Government states all
schools in England must work towards by March
2009.
